Architect

Brock University - Student Residence

This unique project involved the design of a new 250 + bed student residence with dining facility on the north east corner of campus, adjacent to an existing residence.

Time constraints were the biggest challenge for this project, as substantial completion was required in spring 2021 in preparation for the Canada Summer games. To meet the deadline, a structural system of hollowcore precast planks and structural steel was employed. A combination of conventional steel bracing and moment resisting frames was used to permit open, unobstructed fenestration.

A full basement with tunnel connection to the adjacent residence was provided in the north portion of the building. Bedrock was encountered in the basement areas, so rock anchors were used for overturning resistance, negating the need for costly raft foundations.
