Western University's Amit Chakma Engineering Building
This new LEED Platinum building is built to the south of Western’s Spencer Engineering Building. The four storey building is constructed of composite slabs and precast slabs on steel superstructure with a steel framed rooftop mechanical penthouse. The south bay of the third and fourth floors cantilever 9.1 m (30 ft.) over the building’s south courtyard. This is achieved using two-storey deep steel trusses on the east, west, and south elevations.
The 9,600sqm gross building area includes a three storey atrium, student lounge, several computer and technical labs, three tiered-seating classrooms, and faculty and graduate student offices. The south main roof and mechanical penthouse roof are largely covered by PV arrays.
Some challenges included building in proximity to the existing Spencer Engineering and Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Buildings, and constructing new foundations around existing underground services that had to be maintained without interruption including steam lines, IT lines, and electrical duct banks.
