The construction value for the UWO Recreation Centre was $29.5 million. The facility was built as an addition to the east side of the existing Thompson Recreation and Athletic Centre. The addition included 5 gymnasiums, an Olympic size swimming pool, multi-use room, 5 squash courts, weight and fitness room, change room facilities and offices.

Joining the new addition to the existing facility posed many challenges including ensuring that the existing cable-supported roof would not be jeopardized by the new construction. The existing east wall columns acted as tension anchors for the large west span of the existing roof by transferring roof cable loads down into existing 36” diameter caissons. This area housed the former curling rink that was demolished and excavated, making room for new change room facilities below grade. After analysis of the existing roof anchorage system and foundations, it was determined that the excavation could take place.

The two upper level gymnasia are located above the ground floor gymnasia. The floor structure consisted of precast floor planks on 30m long precast I-shaped girders supported by structural steel framing. The large span of the girders presented challenges with supporting the high loads associated with the span as well as the consideration of dynamic requirements for various activities that occupants would participate in.
