Rick is a founding partner of VanBoxmeer & Stranges Engineering Ltd. and has helped shape the firm’s trajectory since its founding in 1994. With over 38 years in the industry, Rick combines deep technical knowledge with a hands-on approach that has guided the firm through decades of growth and innovation across Ontario and beyond.

After earning his engineering degree from Western University, Rick built a broad foundation in geotechnical consulting, building code review, general contracting, and structural design—giving him a deep appreciation of how buildings come together from the ground up. That perspective has made him especially effective in early design phases, where his ability to interpret architectural vision and translate it into efficient, constructible systems is a hallmark of his approach.

Rick is known for pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in structural engineering while remaining deeply pragmatic. Whether landing complex institutional projects or guiding young engineers through detailing challenges, he leads with a balance of technical know-how and good humor. Outside the office, you’ll find him on his motorcycle, at the cottage, or learning a new chord on the guitar—still chasing challenges, just of a different kind.
