2023

The renovations at the Ron W. Ianni Faculty of Law building at the University of Windsor have transformed the 50-year-old brutalist structure into a modern, light-filled, and accessible space. Key changes include new open-concept lounges, collaboration zones, and flexible teaching areas. The centerpiece of the renovation is the Don Rodzik Moot Court, which now features large windows, advanced technology, and accommodations for smudging ceremonies, reflecting the university's connection to Indigenous communities. Accessibility has been greatly enhanced with new elevators, ramps, and universal washrooms, supporting a more inclusive environment for students and faculty. The building’s design integrates natural light throughout, making it a more welcoming and energy-efficient space

The project involved a significant structural transformation, converting the existing concrete lecture theatre into a new structural steel frame system with composite steel decking. Enhancing accessibility across the facility, particularly in older sections, required reconfiguring stairwells, elevators, and entrances. These upgrades often necessitated modifications to existing load-bearing elements. Preserving the building’s architectural and historical integrity throughout the process presented an added layer of complexity. Furthermore, all new mechanical equipment installed on the existing roof structure was carefully supported to ensure no additional snow load was imposed, thereby maintaining the structural performance of the existing roof system.
